Shoral is a Midkemian sorcerer in Betrayal at Krondor. The party can visit him only once, in Chapter 1 or later.

History[]

Shoral is a shifty-looking, icy-voiced sorcerer who lives at the end of a path in Kenting Rush. A farmwoman living nearby can warn the party that "the sorcerer down the road" has a reputation for tricking travelers out of their money by challenging them with three questions, the first two simple and the last unguessable.

If the party attempts to knock at his door, it swings open by itself. The interior is full of bookshelves, with a Lightning Staff in one corner; in another corner, Shoral greets them from his seat at a table stacked with papers.

Shoral offers his Lightning Staff as an award for correctly answering all three of his questions, warning that he will magically "extract payment in gold" if one question is missed and that the test cannot be retaken. If the player answers the first two questions correctly, the party manipulates the last question to win the staff through trickery.

Questions[]

  • Our great and mighty Pug claims to know magic of the greater path, and magic of the lesser path. Is this truly possible? Yes
  • Dragon Lords once ruled the planet. One of these Valheru, Draken Korin, called himself 'Lord of the Eagles.' Do I tell the truth of this? No
  • For the last question, his face is lit with an evil fire, startling Gorath. But Owyn Beleforte, thinking fast, cries out suddenly, pretending to have been struck blind and accusing Shoral of this magical attack. Startled, the sorcerer denies the attack and asks if Owyn can see him, accidentally presenting the party with an easy third question. Owyn replies Yes and "apologizes" for the mistake, grabs the Lightning Staff, and hurriedly leaves.
