The Queen's Row Inn is an inn in Betrayal at Krondor. It can first be visited in Chapter 1.

Overview[]

The Queen's Row is located in Malac's Cross and owned by Ivan Skaald. The barmaid's name is Daphne. The inn is often troubled by rowdy students from the Abbaye Ishap.

Ivan has strict policies for his visitors. Fights, weapons, and animals (especially bandicoots, badgers, and salamanders) are not allowed on the premises. Most importantly, the controversial en passah move is forbidden during chess games, and Ivan refuses to explain the move to anyone who does not already know it.

Interactions[]

Trivia[]

  • Ivan forbids salamanders because they get in the soup and set his dogs to baying in the middle of the dinner hour.
  • En passah refers to the en passant capture, a once-controversial late addition to the rules of European chess. The move was excluded in some parts of Europe, particularly Italy, until the Milan tournament of 1881.

Krondor: The Betrayal[]

The Queen's Row Inn was opened by an old chess player, Barghist, thirty years before the story. A fair player, he launched the inn's reputation as a meeting-ground where chess enthusiasts, local and otherwise, gather to test their mettle.[1]
