While in the service of the Dauphiness of Palanque, Devon, a skilled player at cards, won fifteen straight games of lin-lan against an old sea-dog at a tavern. Refusing to give up, the sailor staked a large diamond on the next round. Devon was unable to match the gem's value, but rashly accepted a dare to bet the purse he was carrying for the Dauphiness. The sailor won, and Devon was forced to work as a bodyguard to compensate the angry Dauphiness for the lost sum.
- The sailor's winning hand consisted of a Blue Lady, a Red Knight, 2 Yellow Squires and a King's Jester.
