Bracknur

A Brak Nurr as portrayed in the Betrayal at Krondor game manual.

Brak Nurr are hostile humanoid creatures made of living rock in Betrayal at Krondor. They can first be encountered in Chapter 1.

Overview[]

Brak Nurr are twice as tall as a human and are made of living stone. Fierce even by dwarven standards, they emit a fierce, cold, terrible baying recognized at once by any dwarf, breathe a green mist from their nostrils, and kill by throwing boulders at anyone who disturbs them. Upon death, they emit a small noxious cloud which leaves a bitter, chalky taste in the mouth and nose and makes the tongue feel thick and adhesive.

Until now, no Brak Nurr has been seen in the upper level of the Mac Mordain Cadal since the days of Delong the Great, and the dwarves had thought they were quelled for good.

During a religious quest, the kobolds living under the Cadal accidentally awoke a clutch of Brak Nurr. The resulting collapse of the cave's main passage killed thirty dwarves and caused a great deal of destruction, riddling the mine with holes and structural instabilities and blocking the way to Elvandar. The dwarves advertised for mercenaries to deal with the problem, attracting groups of rogues just as willing to kill competitors as to hunt the beast.

A second Brak Nurr lurks in the lower levels of the Mac Mordain Cadal, and must be slain to allow passage through the mountains toward Elvandar.

Mentions[]

  • The party learns of the Cadal's Brak Nurr problem and the offered reward from Naddur Ban Dok and Dubal An Loch.
  • Lorgan's Journal is mainly concerned with the Brak Nurr, spelling their name in a number of different incorrect ways.
  • In an occasional bar conversation, a freebooter shows the party the serious scar he received from a group of mercenaries whom the dwarves had called in to try for the bounty on the "Brock Noor".
  • A dwarf living in Caldara shares the accounts he has heard about the rock creatures living in the mines. The party surprise him with their tale of killing a Brak Nurr on their way through the Cadal.
  • One of three very drunk dwarves in the Green Heart boasts that the remains of the "Brak Noors" he has killed comprise the sandbanks on the edge of the Endless Sea.

In Battle[]

A Brak Nurr, a stocky humanoid creature made of chunky grey stone, flings a large rock at Locklear in a dirt floored underground area.

Brak Nurr usually stay in one place during battle, preferring to attack by casting fireballs or throwing large stones at their opponents.

They are immune to Wrath of Killian.[1]

Manual[]

  • The creature's name is hyphenated in the manual, though not in the game.
  • The manual explains that Brak-Nurrs are ambush predators which live in the depths of mines and caves. They are quite broad and appear to be eyeless, and their skin resembles crumbled blocks of stone with small flecks of gold to lure unsuspecting treasure-seekers to the small culverts where they lie in wait. While they prey almost exclusively on Grey Towers dwarves, they are known to attack almost any creature unprovoked.
